1. Prepare the car
Full valet, tidy interior, empty the boot, and make sure the service book is easy to hand. First impressions add real money.
2. Gather the paperwork
Vehicle Registration Certificate (VRC), service history, current NCT certificate, and details of any outstanding finance (clear it before advertising).
3. Take honest photos
8–10 pictures in daylight: full-side, front and rear three-quarter, boot, dashboard, odometer, driver’s seat, tyres. Photograph any dents so buyers don’t feel misled at the doorstep.
4. Set a realistic price
Search Lemown Motors for the same make, model, year and mileage. Price 5–10% above your walk-away figure so there’s room to negotiate.
5. Write the listing
Include mileage, year, engine size, previous owners, service intervals, NCT expiry date, and any recent work (new tyres, timing belt, brakes).
6. Screen the buyers
Serious buyers ask specific questions. Vague messages and requests to "ship abroad" are scams. Only meet in-person, at your home or a busy public place.
7. Handover day
Bank draft or same-room bank transfer. Sign the Change of Ownership section on the VRC and post it to Shannon within 21 days. Cancel your motor insurance and tax after the buyer drives away.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a warranty when selling privately?
No, but you can’t knowingly misrepresent the car. Honesty protects you legally and speeds up the sale.
How much is Irish motor tax?
Cars registered from July 2008 are taxed by emissions (bands A–G). Check motortax.ie.
Can I sell without an NCT?
Legally yes, but disclose the missing NCT clearly. Most buyers will offer significantly less.
