1. Gather the paperwork
VRC (log book), service history, current NCT certificate, and a receipt template ready for handover day. If the car is on finance, clear it before advertising.
2. Present the car well
A full valet, a good wash, and a clean interior can add €300–€500 to your realistic price. Take 8–10 photos in daylight from all angles, including odometer and interior.
3. Price it accurately
Search recent sold prices on Lemown Motors for the same model, year and mileage. Add 5–10% headroom for negotiation, not more.
4. Screen buyers
Serious buyers ask specific questions (service history, timing belt, previous owners). Vague messages or requests to "post it" are usually a waste of time. Meet at your home or a busy public place, with the paperwork ready.
5. Handover day
Bank draft or bank transfer with same-room confirmation. Sign the VRC change-of-owner section and post it to Shannon. Cancel your motor insurance and tax after the buyer has left.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to give a warranty?
Private sellers in Ireland aren’t required to give warranties, but you must not knowingly misrepresent the car. Being honest about faults protects you and speeds up the sale.
Can I sell without an NCT?
Legally you can, but you must disclose the missing NCT. Most private buyers won’t make a serious offer without a current NCT.
